CC Is The Most Pinstriped Of Them All

Uniwatch has the story.

The also have details on changes to the Red Sox, Orioles, and Rays uniforms, which you’ve probably already seen by now.
I’m not sure if I like the hanging socks logo on Boston’s caps.  I do like the Maryland state flag patch on the O’s jerseys.  The Ray’s new alternate jersey doesn’t excite me one way or another.

No. 50 Is The Man

With the exception of the very recent moves of Burnett and Sabathia to the evil empire, things have been really quiet in the Hot Stove League this off-season, presumably because of the worsening financial crisis.  (And I’ll say it again:  the Yankees are wasting good money).

Finally, some happy news to share.   In case you haven’t heard, the 2008 World Campion Phils have signed Jaime Moyer, 46, to a 2-year deal.  Oh yes.  I love this man.  And he has a deal before Manny.

Pinstripes Are Slimming

Joel Sherman of the NY Post has the Yankees making CC Sabathia a monster offer in the AM. His estimate on their opening offer is 6 years for $155 million.

That seems like a lot of money to spend on losing in the playoffs.  They can do that for free with A-Rod.
Ba-ziiiiing.

And The MVP Is?

The World Champ Phils lost their bids for Cy and Manager of The Year, though the Fightin’s have added two Gold Gloves (Rollins, Victornio) and a Silver Slugger (Utley) to their set of ’08 hardware.

I argued last week that Ryan Howard was the strongest contender for the NL MVP.  Because this is a regular season award and I can’t count his wilted post season against him, I’m willing to consider CC Sabathia as well.  Is it possible that a pitcher who wasn’t recognized as the best pitcher in the league could be recognized as the most valuable player to his team in that same league?  That’s weird but it may be the case.  Yes, Sabathia put the Crew in contention, but that same Crew dropped 4 straight to Howard’s Phils late in the season and nothing was the same for either club thereafter.
Another thing to consider here is opportunity for impact.  Can a pitcher in a rotation really be an MVP over a position player like Howard?  Yes, if that pitcher makes the most the opportunities he’s given, and Sabathia certainly did that.  Everyday players have more room for error and more opportunities for redemption.  Does that make Sabathia’s dominance all the more compelling?  Probably.  I’m still pulling for Howard, but the second or third most valuable pitcher in the league (after Lidge and Linecum in my view) may end up as the most valuable player.
From a parity perspective, which I can’t help but think factors into these votes, Milwaukee has a clear advantage over Philly.

More Details From Economists Selig and Boras

I joked yesterday about the stupidity of Selig name-checking the financial crisis at the GM meetings this week.  This from the AP:

“We’re living in a tumultuous economic period,” Selig said later in a telephone interview with The Associated Press. “Many economists believe that we’re going to have significant problems. Maybe this could turn out to be the most difficult period since the Great Depression. I view these coming months with trepidation.”

At least until the World Baseball Classic.  Or the launch of the MLB (cha-ching) Network.    In these trepidatious times, CC Sabathia is still going to earn $100,000,000 to flame out in the playoffs.  Some impulse buying GM is still going to hitch his star to Manny Ramirez’s $100 million wagon.  Selig’s warning might not be intentionally disingenuous, but it is completely out of touch.  Where’s Selig’s message to fans to hold off on those season ticket packages or World Series DVDs?

In related news, Scott Boras and other agents are already talking about negotiating bigger pay days in preparation for the Obama tax increases.  Someone like Sabathia or Ramirez stand to pay $400,000 more in taxes in 2009 if the proposed increases are passed.  Incidentally, that’s the same exact figure as this year’s major league minimum salary.  Interesting context.
